The Network

International Development Economics Associates (IDEAs) is a global network of progressive economists dedicated to researching, teaching, and disseminating critical analyses of economic policy and development. IDEAs’ members aim to strengthen and develop alternatives to the prevailing neoliberal economic paradigm. While based in the Global South and led by economists from developing countries, the network welcomes all who are committed to developing and utilizing alternative heterodox economic analysis tools for contemporary development challenges.

Background

IDEAs was established in September 2001, following a conference in Cape Town, South Africa, on ‘Rethinking Development Economics’ organised by the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) with the support of Ford Foundation. The first Executive Committee was chosen at that conference, with the mandate to establish and build the IDEAs network. Subsequently there have been some changes in the Executive Committee, with the approval of members.

Contributors

Charles Abugre

Executive Director - Charles is a development economist trained at the University of Ghana and the Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands. His research interests include public finance, poverty and inequality, and natural resource governance. He previously worked with the government in Ghana, the United Nations, and Christian Aid.

C. P. Chandrasekhar

Global Director, Research and Policy - Chandrasekhar is a former professor of economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University. His research interests include the macroeconomics of development and the role of finance and industry in developing countries. In 2009, he received the Malcolm Adiseshaiah Award for his contributions to economics and development studies.

Farwa Sial

Asia Regional Director, Research and Policy - Farwa is a political economist with expertise in development and climate finance, industrial policy, and private sector accumulation in the Global South. Farwa is also a Research Associate at the Department of Economics at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London. She has 10 years of experience in academic research, teaching, and policy in various multilateral forums.
